La cena natalizia

My favorite Christmas memories include the yearly “cena natalizia” (Christmastime dinner) with my Italian family and their friends. This dinner is no small feat: Carla, Laura and Francesca plan out an elaborate meal which typically takes several days of prep. They got together last night, and shared some pics. I’m wondering just what I was thinking in foregoing the trip this year….

Here they are in their holiday aprons:The cooks

Bellisime! The next picture won’t really do justice to what I’m certain was a fabulous meal:

Lest you remain unimpressed, here is a close-up shot of what was most certainly a labor of love. If you’ve ever eaten pomegranates, you’ll surely appreciate the effort that went into this “albero di natale”:

In times like these I really wish Italy were closer. No matter how much closer the internet makes us *feel*, the truth that thousands of miles separates us is sometimes hard to bear. Living in your mind has its merits though; take it from Buddha:

What we are today comes from our thoughts of yesterday, and our present thoughts build our life of tomorrow: our life is the creation of the mind. – Dhammapada Verse 1
